What is the difference between Sako 100 and Sako 85?

The Sako 100 is a switch caliber rifle while Sako 85 is a fixed caliber rifle. This means that with Sako 100 it is easy to change between different calibers when you go on different sorts of hunts or in case you are travelling and need different calibers for different purposes. The Sako 100 rifle utilizes similar magazine as the Sako 85, the features and operation of the magazine are the same, but the Sako 100 magazine outer dimensions are constant while the internal dimensions vary depending on the caliber. In the 85 series, the magazines are action size specific, therefore the outer dimensions vary depending on the caliber. The Sako 100 has only one action size. We also have new safety features and a new trigger unit. The Sako 100 stocks are two-piece construction, built around an aluminium chassis, while in the Sako 85, the stocks are full length and the bedding is done to the stock.

Which versions of Sako 100 are available?

Accepted Answer

We offer two versions of the Sako 100: the Sako 100 Explorer Carbon and the Sako 100 Explorer Wood. The difference between these two are the stock materials (carbon and wood) and barrel fluting ( The Explorer Wood has no flutings while Explorer Carbon has flutings).

Which kind of safety is chosen for Sako 100 and why?

Accepted Answer

In Sako 100 the safety solution is manual cocking or commonly called "Handspannung". This is the most secure safety solution for bolt action rifles and this is the reason why it was chosen for our Sako 100 rifle family. When safety is applied, tension is released from the firing spring, which means that the rifle is not possible to go off. Releasing the cocking also locks the bolt handle, but bolt can still be opened and chamber emptied by pressing the small button on the right side of the bolt shroud. When ready to fire, press the cocking button in and the rifle is cocked.

What kind of trigger is in Sako 100?

Accepted Answer

Sako 100 is equipped with single stage trigger. The Sako 100 trigger is multi-adjustable. Weight-of-pull can be adjusted through the trigger guard with a Torx key. There are six steps from 1 to 6 on the adjustment wheel, resembling approx. 750 g to 1750 g, respectively. The trigger blade position can also be adjusted with 7 mm distance in length direction for optimal shooting ergonomy.

How do I change the caliber?

Accepted Answer

First, define which calibers you have to switch, then check which components (magazine and/or bolt) you need, in addition to barrel, from the Sako 100 Configurator. To swithc the barrels, the only tool you need is the torque wrench that is supplied with the rifle. Then, remove both the bolt and magazine from the rifle. Open the two screws under the forend (they are located in front of the magazine release lever). Then, the barrel comes loose. When reassembling the rifle, place the barrel in front of the receiver, on the bedding surfaces of the chassis, and lightly tighten the two screws under the forend. Then, close the bolt and use the torque wrench to tighten the screws until you hear it click (approx. at 7 Nm preset in the torque wrench). Now the rifle is ready to use.

Do I need to remove the scope when changing the barrel?

Accepted Answer

No, the scope can be mounted to the barrel at all times. So you don't have to re-zero the scope.

How do I know which magazine and bolt go with which calibers?

Accepted Answer

The small calibers (243 Win, 308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor) use the bolt A with magazine A1. The Medium calibers (30-06 Sprng., 270 Win, 8x57IS) use the bolt A with magazine A2. For 9,3x62 make sure you get the bolt A with magazine A3. For 6,5x55 SE again the bolt A with magazine A4.

For Magnum calibers (7 mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 375 H&H Mag) use the bolt B with magazine B1.

You can find the markings A1...B1 from each bolt, magazine and barrel. The barrel marking shall always match the magazine marking and the letters in all parts shall match.

Never try to use any other cartridge than what the above listed components are designated for with any of the above described combined components. Always make sure that you have the same letter marking, either A or B on the bolt, magazine and barrel.

Finally verify that you have the exact same letter-number markings (A1...B1) on the barrel and magazine and the corresponding cartridge to the caliber mentioned on the barrel.

How do I mount my scope on my Sako 100 rifle

Accepted Answer

The Sako 100 rifle package includes a scope mount base. This base accepts Optilock rings. Choose the Optilock rings that match your scope's tube diameter and objective diameter. Mount the rings lower halves onto the Sako 100 base and then mount the base to the matching interface in the Sako 100 barrel extension.

Then, place the scope on the lower ring halves and adjust the position correctly to your preferences before tightening the upper halves of the rings. Please refer to the Optilock ring installation instructions for more detailed guidance.

For the Sako 100, we also offer short and long Picatinny-bases. They both are mounted on the Sako 100 barrel extension, and accept a wide range of Picatinny mounts for scopes and red-dots.

How does legislation affect choosing the right caliber for hunting?

Accepted Answer

Authorities in different countries/states/areas define which calibers and bullet types can be used for which game species. If one game can be shot with one caliber in a certain country, it may not be so in some other country. Always make sure from the local authorities which gun-caliber-bullet combinations are allowed for your target game.

How does caliber affect accuracy?

Accepted Answer

Calibers are designed for specific purposes or they can be considered as multi-purpose calibers. In its designed purpose, it does not make a difference accuracy-wise which caliber you choose. The choice needs to be made according to the target game and type of hunting. For instance, short distance calibers are not usable in long distance hunting. Accuracy comes mainly from barrel.

How to choose a versatile caliber?

Accepted Answer

When one caliber is used for multiple purposes, whether it be versatile game species or different hunting strategies, many times, it becomes a compromise. Calibers such as 308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor or 30-06 Sprg are truly versatile, and are a good choice when picking a barrel for the Sako 100.

Then, if you practice a specific types of hunting such as driven hunting to mountain hunting, or bird hunting to large game hunting, it is advised to choose a caliber dedicated to these hunts and game.

What is the effect of barrel length?

Accepted Answer

Short barrels make the handling of the rifle easier and lighter. However, longer barrel give more time for the powder to burn, thus increasing the speed and kinetic energy of the bullet.

What are the differences between wooden and carbon fiber stock in Sako 100

Accepted Answer

Sako 100 Explorer Wood is the a traditional and elegant rifle with grade 3 woods and classic checkerings. The stock has high quality oiled finish to give good weather protection. For ultimate lightness and weather resistance we recommend the Sako 100 Explorer Carbon with RTM carbon fiber stock. The RTM method gives a extremely high-quality carbon fiber structure that results in light and rigid structure but also absorbs recoil much better than more common composites.

Both stocks are interchangeable and are sold as accessories, so if your first purchase is the Sako 100 rifle with wooden stock, you can later buy the carbon fiber stocks (or vice versa) and replace them in your rifle to give it wider range of use.

Which carbon fiber technology is used in Sako 100 and its main benefits?

Accepted Answer

The Sako 100 carbon fiber stocks are manufactured with RTM technology. In the RTM method (Resin Transfer Moulding) we use 360 degree woven carbon fiber mesh for the most durable, rigid and strong structure, combined with highly accurate geometry. The internal structure of the stock efficiently absorbs and reduces recoil so lightness does not compromise shooting comfort.

How do I detach the stocks from the rifle?

Accepted Answer

The forend can be detached by first detaching the barrel from the rifle and then loosening the forend retaining bolt. Turn the bolt then over the bracket and pull the forend forward to release it from the chassis. Reassemble in the reverse order.

The rear stock can be detached from the rifle by loosening the rear stock retaining bolt through the tool compartment box. Reassemble in the opposite order.

What is manual cocking and its benefits?

Accepted Answer

Manual cocking can be considered as the most secure safety solution for bolt action rifles. When the rifle is de-cocked, the firing pin spring is relaxed and is physically unable to release the firing pin onto the primer. When you are ready to fire, you can manually re-cock the rifle securely while aiming towards the shooting sector.

How do I adjust the trigger position?

Accepted Answer

The trigger position is an important factor affecting your shooting ergonomics and eventually your shooting performance. Typically, the correct position is when you easily reach the trigger with your finger tip and locate the trigger in the pad of the index finger before the first indent.

Trigger position can be adjusted by loosening the 2 mm Allen screw from the trigger and then repositioning the trigger to achieve a desired shooting ergonomics. Then just re-tighten the screw.

How do I adjust the weight of pull?

Accepted Answer

The Sako 100 trigger is equipped with a six-step weight-of-pull adjustment. The adjustment is done through the trigger guard, right in front of the trigger with a #25 Torx key. The range for weight-of-pull is approximately from 750 g to 1750 g. The adjustment can be done without removing any parts, with the tool found in the tool compartment box at the bottom of the rear stock.

Typically, a heavier weight-of-pull is used when hunting is driven hunt or other fast paced hunting event. Lighter weight-of-pull, however, is normally desired when shooting in long distance or very high accuracy is needed.
